Micro habits

Less tension, more space.

“Somatic” simply means of the body. These eight practices are about noticing where you hold tension and giving yourself more room to breathe, move and think.

1. Gentle self-massage

Use light pressure on your jaw, forehead, the bridge of your nose, the sides and back of your neck, and your sternum. Many people find this eases facial and neck tension and makes breathing feel more open. Try it morning and evening. A Calm or Reprieve roller blend on your neck and chest is a pleasant addition if you enjoy scent.

2. Grounded breathing

Lie face down and breathe into your abdomen for one to five minutes. Try box breathing (4–4–4–4) or breathe in for 4 and out for 6. Many people find this calming and good for body awareness. If lying face down is uncomfortable, lie on your back instead.

3. Declutter your space

Order in your home or workspace gives your eyes and mind somewhere to rest. A Calm or Restore diffuser blend can add to the sense of fresh space.

4. Let go to renew

Donate, sell or release what no longer serves you. Many people feel lighter inside when there’s more room around them.

5. Stretch often

A gentle stretch every 45 minutes or so is a kind way to break up a long sitting spell.

6. Observe your breath

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Notice where the breath goes and where you hold back, on the inhale or the exhale, then soften there.

7. Have the tension-release chats

The hard conversations are easier when you have them early and often. Calmly saying what’s true leaves room for honesty and for understanding each other.

8. Create rhythm

Our bodies tend to settle with gentle, soothing rhythm. Explore your senses (smell, sound, touch, movement) and notice which ones help you slow down.

I’d love to hear which of these helps you. Reach out and share your experience with me.
