Wellness tools for therapists
The body’s hidden river.
Your lymphatic system quietly helps keep fluid balanced and supports your immune system. It has no pump of its own, so it relies on you.

What the lymphatic system does
The lymphatic system helps drain excess fluid from your tissues and plays a part in immune health. Unlike the circulatory system, it has no heart to drive it. Lymph moves with breathing, muscle movement and changes in pressure in the body.
What supports flow
- Breath. Slow, deep breathing moves the diaphragm and ribs, which helps lymph move.
- Movement. Walking, stretching and changing position all help.
- Gentle touch. Lymph vessels lie just under the skin, which is why lymphatic drainage uses light, slow, rhythmic touch rather than firm pressure.
- Sound. Humming and singing bowls can encourage slow breathing and a relaxed body, which many people find supportive of general ease.
- Scent. Oils such as grapefruit, cypress, rosemary, lemon, African wormwood, rose geranium and Cape snowbush are lovely for many people as part of a relaxing session. Mention any allergies or sensitivities beforehand.
When to see a doctor
If you have persistent swelling, a diagnosed condition such as lymphoedema, or you’re recovering from surgery, speak to your treating healthcare professional first. Gentle wellness sessions don’t replace medical assessment or a care plan.
Closing reflection
The lymphatic system thrives on rhythm, softness and movement. When you breathe deeply and move gently, many people notice that the body feels lighter and calmer.
