Wellness tools for therapists
The rhythm within: cerebrospinal fluid and movement.
Deep inside the body, a clear fluid moves around the brain and spinal cord. Here’s what we know, what some practitioners believe, and some gentle ways to support ease.

What cerebrospinal fluid does
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It cushions them and helps carry away waste. The body makes roughly 500 ml a day, although only around 150 ml is present at any one time, so it’s constantly renewed.
Breath, posture and movement
Some bodywork traditions, including craniosacral approaches, hold that a relaxed breathing pattern and a mobile spine encourage healthy CSF movement. This view is widely held among practitioners, but scientific evidence for hands-on influence on CSF is limited. I share it as a way of thinking about ease, not as a medical claim.
What I can say from my own practice is that when people breathe more slowly and release tension in the jaw, throat, ribs and back, they often describe a feeling of “inner spaciousness.”
Therapist takeaways
- Breath work, soft rocking, gentle spinal mobilisation and sound can all help clients settle into a slower rhythm.
- Humming is an accessible tool. It softens the throat and chest and encourages slow, steady breathing.
- Stress, shallow breathing, prolonged sitting, past surgery and emotional holding all show up as tension in the body. Sound, breath and gentle touch can help clients notice and release it.
- Explaining why subtle work can feel significant helps clients take part in their own sessions.
Between sessions
Encourage clients to try slow, conscious breathing, posture awareness, gentle twists, cat–cow movements, or lying on their back with knees bent while softly rocking side to side.
Closing reflection
Think of this rhythm as a reminder: when we slow down and breathe, the body often feels clearer and calmer.
If you have persistent headaches, brain fog, anxiety or other symptoms, please see your doctor. These practices support relaxation and are not a treatment.
